Artist Statement
This digital collage is inspired by a story about the Raquette River (Ahnawá:te in the Mohawk language) on a winter evening, when a horned owl swooped down a tree and seemed to guide the storyteller along the riverbank. This experience sharpened her thoughts and gave her a new perspective on her life and work. The background in this artwork references the geometric patterns found in Mohawk quilts, rooting the composition in connections to land and ancestral/water memory. The color palette captures the twilight moment and starts with blues that quickly turn purple and gold. There is a fractured red line where the sun has set, a boundary between day and night, and white circles against a black sky which evoke the snow on the ground. A swooping owl foregrounds the collage and embodies movement, energy, and nature’s sway and wisdom.
