This piece was created in response to stories shared about people’s connections with the Raquette and the Genesee. As I listened, I heard three broad themes: what people see, what they do, and what they feel by the river. People spoke of the wildlife they encounter along the water’s edge - an aspect that resonated deeply with me - but they also voiced concern over less welcome sights like pollution, algal blooms, and dangerous ice. What people described doing by the river ranged from active recreation - walking, biking, fishing, birdwatching - to quiet moments of reflection, ritual, play, and wonder. Most of all, people described the river as a source of feeling: peace, calm, joy, healing, and belonging, but threaded through were occasional notes of fear and unease about the river’s fragility and future. River Stories is a patchwork of these voices and moods, reflecting our layered relationships with rivers: their wildlife, their rituals, their calm, and their fragility.
